Some systems need a neutral wire at the switch, which older homes often don’t have, so I check the wiring first and recommend products that will work reliably in your home. Smart dimmers, motion sensors in hallways and outdoor lights that come on at dusk are all popular, and they can usually be added room by room.

Smart heating controls let you set different temperatures for different rooms and adjust things while you’re out, which helps avoid heating an empty house. Video doorbells show you who’s at the door wherever you are. Many people already use Google, Alexa or Apple Home, and I can help choose devices that fit with the platform you prefer rather than tying you into something new.

Scenes and automations are where a smart home starts to feel useful. A single tap or phrase can dim the lights for a film, switch everything off when you leave, or turn on the porch light when the doorbell rings.
