Your consumer unit is where every circuit in the property starts, so it’s worth getting right. Older boards often rely on rewireable fuses or a single switch that protects nothing in particular. A modern unit uses RCDs or RCBOs that cut the power in a fraction of a second if current leaks to earth, which is what protects people from a serious shock. Where it’s needed, I’ll also fit surge protection to guard against spikes that can damage electronics.

Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable work, so it must be notified under Part P of the Building Regulations. Your quote will set out how that will be done and any fee involved, so nothing comes as a surprise. Before I fit anything I test the existing circuits, because a new board can show up faults the old one was hiding. If I find something unexpected, I’ll explain it and agree the next step with you before carrying on.

On the day, expect the power to be off for most of it. I’ll let you know in advance so you can plan around fridges, freezers and working from home. Once the new unit is in, every circuit is tested to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations, and clearly labelled so you know which breaker does what. Your Electrical Installation Certificate is emailed to you afterwards.
